Harkin back to the days of cowboys and Indians and Mexia was there. John Wayne's action adventure movie The Searchers was loosely based on the story of Cynthia Ann Parker. Cynthia Ann's family was part of a group of Indiana pilgrims who came to Texas in search of a better life. Cynthia Ann was captured by the Comanches and assimilated into the tribe. Her Indian son was Quanta Parker, the last Comanche War Chief. Fort Parker still stands just south of Mexia on the Navasota River.

How about oil? Wildcatters and gushes, none bigger than Mexia. Martial law was required to handle the Mexia oil boom.
